Recently OC Human Relations Commission and Council staff partnered to organize a series of four dialogues between members of the Tustin Police Department and parents of Currie Middle School parents. The goals were to strengthen relationships between parents and the police department; clear up stereotypes and negative perceptions between law enforcement and Latino Parents; and to develop a better understanding of each other’s role in the community.

In the category of Community Oriented Policing, we are honoring the Sheriff for her creation of an Inter Faith Advisory Council. We are aware that community members have well-articulated concerns over decisions and policies the Sheriff has authored, this is one particular initiative that we felt has been positive and wanted to show case as the type of engagement that we value.

At the meeting of the Orange County Board of Supervisors held on March 27, 2018, numerous residents of the county came to address the Board, demonstrating a high level of civic engagement and a wide spectrum of perspectives.
Unfortunately, the meeting dissolved into hostility, name-calling and scapegoating. Such vitriol plainly impedes the ability of people – like-minded or not – to work together. This weakens our ability to address issues like homelessness and immigrant integration, and communicates the wrong message to our children.
On May 3, 2018 OC Human Relations will honor the outstanding work of local individuals and groups at its Annual AWARDS Celebration and Fundraiser at the City National Grove of Anaheim. The AWARDS Celebration is a unique occasion that brings together hundreds of residents, along with business and community leaders to celebrate justice, diversity and the human spirit. The title sponsor for AWARDS 2018 is Banc of California.

Walk In My Shoes, OC Human Relations’ Annual BRIDGES Youth Conference, brings together students from across Orange County to explore issues of identity and culture, develop leadership skills, and learn from examples of successful youth activism. The goal is to empower and mobilize students to work towards creating positive social change. This year’s conference theme was: “In Solidarity, In Struggle”.
